This course is set up for people who are ready and wanting to start a project on new land and want to learn how to optimize their use of that land for sustainability and ease. This course will be primarily led by Jo Jandai and mix local wisdom, with some permaculture design, and new techniques that have been successful in Thailand with various groups.

The course will include; aspects to look for in buying new land, water access and how to know where you can find water, road access, neighbor relations, building up soil fertility, building site design, tree placement and care, and more.

If possible participants should bring with them the basic knowledge of the land they are hoping to be on and also a general idea of their goals for the land/project.

LOGISTICS PERTAINING TO THE COURSE

General Schedule

Morning and afternoon sessions will be held with an extended break after lunch in the hot part of the day.

The Project

The course will be hosted at Pun Pun’s new second location near Prao town. This is a piece of land we have been developing for the past couple of years. It has a large area of 150 rai which have been being developed for a training center and organic production gardens along with animal husbandry with our friends who have grass-fed cows and ducks. We have decided to host the course here as it’s a great way to see new land with ponds, canals, filtration systems and production recently implemented and discuss these models.

Teaching team

Various community members from Pun Pun farm

Living situation

Accommodation is very simple with two large raised floor, half-wall, open air, roofed spaces in which we will set up tents for participants to stay. You will have your own tent with a thin futon mat, pillow, bedsheet, and blanket. There are communal showers and toilets close to the dorms and a communal kitchen.

All meals will be shared and eaten in the communal kitchen.  Vegetarian and fish options will be available and we will try to use the most organic vegetables as possible from the farm.  Food will be simple Thai food with brown rice.  We try to use as much of our own produce and other seasonally available produce as possible so we tend to focus on a primarily vegetable and whole grain diet with added protein from eggs, fish, or tofu.

Fee

6,000 baht/person.  This fee includes pick-up and drop-off in Chiang Mai on the first an last day of the course, all food during the course, accommodation and instruction.  All proceeds go towards supporting Pun Pun community to grow and continue with our seed center and outreach work.

Community living aspect

Each course will have approximately 15-20 participants.  Participants will also be asked to engage in helping with community work on the farm.  This may be help in watering the gardens, helping with breakfast or other meal cooking rotations, etc.  We do this to help participants to immerse themselves with the Pun Pun community as well as to help to experience more of our philosophy on self-reliant living.

We have children at the farm and share our meals and community space together so be aware that there is a general level of activity and noise in public spaces.  We ask all participants to refrain from any illegal drug use at Pun Pun or excessive drinking.
